What’s the point of falling in love, anyways? Part I

Why do humans fall in love? (Answer that, Stephen Hawkins)
Why do humans need to care, feel, touch other human being? Why do we actually care about our feelings? Why do we get attached to other people’s opinion, tastes, decisions, likes and dislikes?
These are a bunch of valid questions for someone who doesn’t really understand what all is about with love. But as a Christian young adult, I’ve been learning some stuff, and reading some other stuff. I’ve learned from my own experiences and heartbreaks, and I’ve seen the pain that “love” can inflict to people who doesn’t get it.
I don’t get it.
That’s why I gotta ask myself these questions too:
If it is NOT about physical attraction, neither chemistry; if is NOT about looking for pleasure but to self-sacrifice; if it is NOT about your own happiness; if the only one who can love the true way is God, and to love one another is to show and proclaim His glory alone; if we suffer because of it, and we tend to make the wrong decisions all the time… If love is NOT about US:
What’s the point of falling in love, anyways?
To answer that, we need to speak about the one who created the complex human being: God. We can say that He is the one who invented “falling in love” too. So let’s go to the Genesis, and let’s discover why God put a man and a woman together for the first time.
18Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” (Gen 2:18, NLT)
After He created the heavens and earth, the animals and the plants, God created man. Later God gave man a job (Yes. A job before sin). And after giving him a job, God saw that Adam was missing something. God, in His wisdom, faithfulness and LOVE for us, He knew we weren’t meant to be alone. God Himself is 3 in 1. He rejoices in the society and relationship with the Son and the Holy Spirit. (Not 3 gods, One God. 3 persons, btw.) And even He realized that man wasn’t meant to be by himself.
“But…Adam got company. He got the animals, right?” No, pets’ fans, you are not meant to be with your pets the rest of your lives (bunch of cat ladies). You were meant to interact with other human beings. We are social beings since the beginning of time.
“But… why God created another human being? Why couldn’t He create another living thing, like a Martian, for example? Or a talking dog?” Well, the answer to that question is on Adam’s reaction and response to the unveiling of Eve:
23“At last!” the man exclaimed.
“This one is bone from my bone,
and flesh from my flesh!
Look at that reaction…It’s like a whole stadium popping when Stone Cold Steve Austin gets to wrestle. The kid is amused, thrilled, happy. He got someone who is like him. He got someone he could recognize as close. He got someone who he could call a fellow. He got someone he could call an equal.
God knew that we were created with a desire to belong to someone; ultimately to God, but, living in this earth, we can belong to someone. We cannot live in this earth by ourselves. Where is survival? Where is companionship?
Now I understand that the first reason God created “the falling in love” thing, is because He knew we cannot live by ourselves. Fair enough. But how can you explain “love at first sight”, “butterflies in the stomach”, “the One” myth…Let’s keep digging the Bible so we can understand more about real love.
I wanna give a shoutout to my little brother Emilio in his birthday! And of course: Happy Valentine’s day, everyone!
